"Fascinating . . . laugh-aloud funny." - The Los Angeles Times
In December of 1968, Phyllis Raphael landed in London as the restless wife of a Hollywood movie producer. With their three young children in tow from L.A., she was prepared for a London vacation on MGM's dime while her husband was on the set. Instead - in a maneuver Raphael wasn't expecting - he left her for an eighteen-year-old actress. And in a decision she never could have predicted, Raphael stayed in London with her kids.
Off the King's Road is Raphael's courageous and funny story of being an expatriate let loose in the turbulence of Swinging London in the 1960s. She arrived naive, dependent and dissatisfied, and left several years later as another person entirely a single mother, a writer, a woman in command - for better or worse - of her own life. Written with seductive elegance, humor and sexual candor, Off the King's Road speaks to all women of the possibilities of a life transformed by circumstance.
"A compelling work that captures an era . . . Raphael's account of the English teetering between ingrained restraint and letting-it-all-hang-out is acute - hilarious and sad. Raphael is a talented writer, and she captures her heightened awareness of post marital-split life with refreshing vigor." - VeryShortList.com
"At once a powerful coming-of-age memoir and a vivid study of London in the Swinging '60s." - Columbia Daily Spectator
"What a journey! Raphael cavorts with everyone from tripping poets to Marlon Brando." - Marie Claire
"Spirited . . . Eloquent." - East Hampton Star
"Stylish" - Publishers Weekly
"Savvy . . . Vibrant . . . An elegant memoir of a swinging time" - Kirkus Reviews
"Immensely appealing" - Booklist
"A delicious book - warm and witty - one that evokes the Swinging Sixties from a point of view rarely heard from." - Vivian Gornick, author of Fierce Attachments
"[It has] acutely observed detail, a tactile immediacy, a cool, appraising eye, and humor. Plus, Swinging London! Phyllis Raphael has bid her memory speak, and we can only listen. It is a pleasure to do so." - David Rakoff, author of Don't Get Too Comfortable and Fraud
"Her decision to stay in London with her children is the first she's made for herself in a long time and a turning point in this fascinating book. Her weeding through London's poseurs and hypochondriacs to find a good man is laugh-aloud funny. She emerges a full-fledged single woman." - The Los Angeles Times
"Every sentence is constructed with enviable grace and economy . . . Rare and evocative." - Haven Kimmel, author of A Girl Named Zippy
"Tender, hilarious and utterly charming." - Hilma Wolitzer, author of An Available Man
"A sheer delight." - Lynne Sharon Schwartz, author of Two-Part Inventions
"Hugely enjoyable, a chronicle of a feverish time as well as a riveting personal journey." - Molly Haskell, author of Love and Other Infectious Diseases
"On the money and deliciously deadpan. It is also very, very smart." - Patricia Volk, author of Shocked My Mother, Schiaparelli, and Me
"As vivid and engrossing as any novel." - Frances Kiernan, author of Seeing Mary Plain A Life of Mary McCarthy
"Wonderful . . . witty, wry and irrepressible." - Elizabeth Kendall, author of American Daughter Discovering My Mother

I wrote this book but I haven't looked at it in years. I bought this copy as a gift for someone (it's now an e-book from Roadswell publishers). I just happened to open it again before I gave it away and the words felt completely new to me. The whole experience of being left and living in a foreign city, a "swinging" city, at a time when every idea I'd grown up with was being turned upside down came rushing back to me. All of it was there - the sex and drugs of course, the zany characters I met, the people I loved - but also the city, a London which no longer exists; a small town of green parks, whitewashed squares and mews and excitement in the streets.Yes...I recommend this book. The jacket says it's a portrait of a life"transformed by circumstance." And I think that's true. After London I was never the same. It was great fun going back there again and seeing the place and time where that happened.,

Off the King Road Lost and Found in London eBook Phyllis Raphael Reviews
the book is well written and entertaining but it is less a memoir then a justification piece. it seems that ms. raphael is justifying her behaviors and making excuses for bad decisions she has made in her life. this is not a down to earth, honest memoir. it is a self-preservation attempt. if you can overlook this, you might enjoy it.
This book is a wonderful read, a fascinating adventure story of a painful divorce and the richness of the new life Raphael creates for herself after the dust settles. It is written beautifully, with, as I said, with warmth, wisdom and wit. In fact, the writing is extraordinarily gifted as it conveys the struggle and deep caring the author experienced. Simply put, it's an unusual book that holds you well and creates regrets when it comes to its simple but promising ending.
Raphael's book is a wonderful window into a family - a single mother & her three children -- in the pulsating London of the late 1960's. 'Beautifully written, informative and entertaining. A fun good read and you don't have to feel guilty afterwards because it's so well written.

I am a real lover of creative non-fiction. Give me a good memoir and I'm happy! "Off the King's Road" is one of those. I found it engaging from start to finish both for the way Raphael pulls us into her journey with her truthful entertaining style and the way she evokes 1960s London perfectly on key. She gets it right when she subtitles her book "Lost and Found in London" ... taking us along on her journey from a bad breakup to really finding herself -- and her voice --and all of her adventures in between. It's a book made richer by the perspective of time and left me with an authentic sense of hope. A really good read!
It takes twelve pages for the author to say Marlon Brando rubbed his knuckles against her arm while simultaneously hugging RIta Hayworth. This is a going nowhere slowly book. It's an inflated, name-dropping HEY WORLD LOOK AT HOW GREAT I AM book. I couldn't take much of it. I don't recommend it.
I was born in the 1970's, am not divorced, have no kids, and have never lived in London, so I can say with all honestly I have NO IDEA what it would have been like to be her. Nevetheless, I was completely intrigued at this snapshot of life...and truthfully a little jealous!
A great read for anyone who feels like they missed out on all things swinging and wants a glimpse of it. Well-written, easy to follow, and hard to put down.
The book did not capture my interest and I really tried. The blurb sounded quite good, but, alas ,midway I started skipping and in the end i just had to delete the whole thing Looking back at my time in the late 19 sixties , I had 100 x times more exciting adventures experiences than this lady. Although I had no movie producer ex husband and neither mansion nor servants . She came across as rather boring ,insecure & shallow .Where there could have been profundity & rhapsodic disclosures it was all deadpan & lacking in poignancy.Over all, I saw not point whatsoever in publishing this.
